October 10th Audio Show with KOI NATIONS Publisher & Editor Michael Cox who shares with the audience the beginnings of this U.S. based publication that covers the koi-keeping hobby internationally. Cox explains the careful approach that he has taken in producing what has certainly been one of the most talked about publications in the hobby. KOI NATIONS made its splash in June 07 in a big as a full-color glossy that is distributed in nearly 200 locations worldwide. Todorsky and Hawley also discuss articles recently published in Water Garden News and cross-contamination concerns that took place at KOI AMERICA 2007. Were they a big deal or an example of how we have become supersensitive in the hobby?

John

July 13 Audio Show Mick Hilleary, owner of TotalHabitat.com took questions and explained the mechanics and philosophy behind his pool and watergarden combinations of typically 40,000 gallons wherein he recommends owners swim with their koi and other fish. Sound unusual? Not so. Regulations are popping up around the country to regulate water gardens and koi ponds like swimming pools. Yet, this is not Hilleary's concern as a producer of systems that he believes people will enjoy and without threat to human health. A recent study that demonstrated high protein processed koi food produces more deformities than chicken manure and cow dung from the Journal of Applied Ichthyology, Volume 23, Number 1, February 2007 , pp. 87-92 was discussed. The abstract is listed amongst the archives in the Koi News Network. Plus, a discussion of a recent MAKC magazine article detailing considerations in koi growth were discussed.

Designate Koi Varieties into subspecies of Cyprinus carpio

by John Hawley

As is so often commonly said in the koi hobbyist community these fish are genetically disposed to variations in color and pattern and many desirable varieties have been lost and the history of them muddled via selective breeding. Why not pursue the application of the subspecies nomenclature to Cyprinus carpio for ornamental koi? Other animal and plant species are differentiated into subspecies by factors that may or may not include geographic distribution, behavioral characteristics, coloration, genetic markers and morphology. Why not koi (continued)?
